Cultural fires on the Sunshine Coast
For the first time on the Sunshine Coast, Rural Fire Brigades and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services supported Traditional Owners to undertake a controlled ecological burn following the ancient cultural practices of Australian Aborigines. Turning salt degraded soil into productive land - can it be done?
Can salt scalded land be reclaimed and made productive?
The answer is ‘yes’ and Barry and Marjorie Jahnke’s property on the outskirts of Kalbar will be showcased by Bremer Catchments to reveal how it can be done.
The Jahnkes will share what they have learned from their decade-and-a-half long project to rehabilitate their 17 hectare property from a salt scald to a wetland teaming with birdlife. Read more…

Giant rat’s tail grass and other weeds field day at Mt Kilcoy
In response to ongoing concerns about the spread of Giant rat’s tail grass and its significant impacts locally, SEQ Catchments and Brisbane Valley-Kilcoy Landcare Group are hosting a field day at Mt. Kilcoy on Friday 18th March to improve awareness of and management responses to this invasive grass and other weed species.

4000th property joins Land for Wildlife program
Private landholders right across South East Queensland are continuing to play an important role in conserving our most endangered plants and animals through a program known as Land for Wildlife, which now covers more than 65,000 ha across the region and recently welcomed its 4000th property.
